will not melt normal size solder. It says to use a very small dai. solder. I couldn't find that size solder any where. Great idea but just won't work in real life. I ended up giving it to a friends kid who wanted to take it apart and see how it worked. I thought, well at least it might give him some pleasure and spark some couriosity.

It's looks like a sexy product when you browse the Costco isle: fast cool off, runs on batteries, good for small jobs, etc. But the reality is that this thing can't melt the solder well enough to coat a wire, let alone attach 2 wires coated by solder. You are forced to push hard on the tips to get a good contact, and the contacts (made of carbon) become brittle as they heat up. Basically, this is useless even for the smallest job, and is just a ploy to sell you tips (think ink jet cartridges.)

Works ok, but it is not the most powerful soldering device I have used. Not for your large or electronic items. It could be better but the best thing is the ease of use, just turn it on and you off and going. Though I am disappointed on the type of material used for this product, plastic, not my obvious choice when working with heat.
